What is Power? What does it mean to be powerful? When you become powerful, how do you know it?
I have often wondered over my life what it would be like to have power and be truly powerful. I have also pondered on if when Power arrived I would recognise it or even be happy to have it! The possibility of having power both excites me and give me the heebee geebees!!!
May be Power wouldn’t be so exciting yet scary if we really looked at what Power is and what it truly means to be Powerful. It may also help to understand why we feel powerless a lot of the time…..what’s your thoughts on that?????
1. What is Power?
Some may say it is……the ability to control another person, thing or situation.Others…..the ability to create, influence and make changes
Would you consider……..money, fame and success as power?
Wikipedia’s definition is…………..a measure of an entity’s ability to control the environment around itself, including the behaviour of other entities.
For me real power is being able to control oneself. Our choices, how we feel about things that happen to us, around us, how we think and what we know. This gives a real sense of self, a sense of power.
Ralph Waldo Emerson said – “There is no knowledge that is not power”
The Secret by Ronda Byrnes teaches about the Power within all of us.
This is where I believe true Power is – Within us!!!
2. What does it mean to be Powerful?
I think the answer to this question may be different from individual to individual, due to our beliefs, values etc etc.
How I personally view being Powerful is based primarily on what I believe about Power. I believe that power is based on how you control yourself, your behaviours in any given situation or circumstances and whether you give away your power to others eg in way of time, choices made etc.
To be Powerful is to be able to take advice and still make an informed decision/choice based on what you know is best for you, knowledge gained from others and not make decisions based on whether other may see it as good or bad, it’s what you think and believe that matters!
To stay in your truth and sticking with your beliefs and values is being Powerful, this can be difficult as we humans can be swayed by our needs for acceptance and that can at time cause us to go against ourselves, our beliefs and values deeming us powerless.
Lao Tzu said – “He who controls others may be powerful, but he who has mastered himself is mightier still”
3. When you become Powerful, how do you know it?
For me you know when you become Powerful. It when you stick to your beliefs, You stick to your decision no matter how things may look to others or the results that you may be having currently not what you want although you stay persistent and consistent with your plans and stay with what is true for you – it is then you know you are Powerful and in a Powerful place.
Try imagining yourself as one or more of the people with Power in the picture to the right. Power do you feel it? Do you know it? How does it feel?
